Things to consider when setting up an accommodation business
Why set up a business?
Visitor spending is worth an estimated £389 million to West Norfolk each year, 11% being spent on accommodation. It's a good time to set up an accommodation business.
It's exciting setting up a business, but it can be hard work. If you follow our guidance points you will have the information you need to start up an accommodation business, and enjoy the rewards of doing so.
Planning permission
You may need planning permission to set up your new business, for example if you're changing a private house into a bed and breakfast (B&B). This is termed 'a change of use'.
For more information, please visit our planning pages.
Building regulations
If you're making changes to a dwelling to make it into a B&B, you'll likely require building regulations. Building regulation looks at issues like:
- structural safety
- minimising carbon monoxide emissions
- drainage arrangements
- sound insulation between properties
- fire safety
For more information, please visit our building control page.
Registering with our food department
All food businesses must be registered with our Environmental Health Department 28 days before they are due to open. B&B's and Guest Houses will need to register.
For more information, please visit our food registration page.
Fire Safety
The Fire Reform Regulations Act 2006 requires all sleeping accommodation businesses to:
