Help with travel costs

Information about single bus fare cap, help with hospital appointments and train discounts

Cap on single journeys for many operators

The cost of many single bus fares will be capped at £2 until 31 December 2024. From 1 January 2025 it will be capped at £3.

In west Norfolk it depends on which bus company you travel with. The list below tells you the companies that operate in this area which are in the schemes:

  • Coach Services (runs a service from Thetford to King’s Lynn)
  • First (Peterborough-Norwich service goes through King’s Lynn)
  • Stagecoach (runs a service from King’s Lynn to Spalding)
  • Sanders Coaches (circular route from Fakenham takes in Syderstone and North and South Creake)

West Norfolk Community Transport (which operates the Dial A Bus and Go To Town services) and Lynx Bus are not taking part in this scheme. They do have their own discount schemes, for example savings on monthly tickets or savings between certain locations. For more information have a look at their websites.

If you have a qualifying, permanent disability, if you receive certain benefits or you are of pensionable age, you can apply for a bus pass giving you free off-peak travel.

Help with transport to hospital

If you have to go to or from hospital, for a stay or an appointment, you may be able to claim a refund of your costs. Check the NHS Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme for more information.

50% off train fares

If you are unemployed and claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance or Universal Credit, you could apply for a Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card, giving you a 50% discount on some rail tickets.

Contact your local Jobcentre for more information.
