Nominations are being sought for the Mayor’s Design Awards, which are once again being organised by the borough council in association with KL Magazine.
Any project completed, including landscaping, between 1 April 2022 and 30 March 2024 can be entered for an award.
These prestigious awards, celebrate local architectural excellence and craftsmanship and highlight the role good design plays in making our community an attractive place to live and visit.
“Since becoming mayor I’ve seen first-hand the vision and skills of our local designers, architects and builders while travelling around the borough,”
said the Mayor of King's Lynn & West Norfolk Cllr Margaret Wilkinson.
“Quality design and careful craftsmanship can make a real difference in the local community – whether it’s a completely modern build or refurbishing something back to its old splendour.
"These skilled people are all helping to make West Norfolk a more desirable place to live.”
Architects, planners, planning agents, owners, parish councils or members of the public can nominate a scheme or development, with the permission of the owner.
The Mayor is keen to ensure next year’s awards maintain the high standards the Mayor’s Design Awards have set since they began.
“Please nominate and encourage others to nominate schemes that are innovative and attractive and that enhance our area,”
she says.
“Let us rightly reward the people responsible for these wonderful designs.”
The Mayor’s Design Awards focus on small-scale works by local architects, designers and contractors, and the competition is split roughly into the following categories:
- Extensions
- Conversions
- New single homes
- Groups or small residential developments
- Commercial schemes
- Workshops and industrial developments
- Landscaping and enhancement schemes
- Community amenities
- Repairs and refurbishments
- Craftsmanship
Please note that the categories may change in respect of the types and numbers of schemes nominated, and all nominations will be assessed by the mayor and a panel of judges. The judges will be looking for schemes which bring pleasure through design, workmanship or their contribution to a particular setting.
Laura Dunn, Managing Director of KL magazine, added:
“Our team at KL magazine have had the pleasure to be involved with the Mayor's Design awards for several years now. We feel privileged to have built strong relationships and trust with so many of our local architects, property developers and builders, who have guided us through a wealth of their outstanding projects.
“It has been astounding to see the talent we have here in our county first-hand and a delight to photograph and showcase these amazing developments in high quality print. The standard of work from concept to completion gets better each year and we are very excited to see the new entries for 2024.”
During the awards' history, an impressive array of schemes have been nominated. Judges have explored everything from skilful conversions to sympathetic new builds and innovative commercial architecture.
Anyone can nominate a building or scheme with the permission of the owner by completing an application form – available now at www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/mayorsdesignawards.
Paper copies are also available at borough council offices and parish councils. All applications should be accompanied by electronic photographs depicting the site before and after works.
Entries close on 30 April 2024.
Winners will be announced at a special award ceremony on 17 September 2024.
