Notice of Election published today – everything West Norfolk voters need to know

A General Election will take place on Thursday, 4 July

Published: Monday, 3rd June 2024

The Notice of Election for the forthcoming General Election has been published today. Here’s everything voters in West Norfolk need to know.

A General Election will take place on Thursday, 4 July. Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.

Voter registration

Anyone wishing to vote at the general election must be registered to vote. Voters can register up to midnight on 18 June.

Anyone wanting to vote by post must apply for a postal vote by midnight on 19 June.

Poll cards

Poll cards for the forthcoming general election are due to be sent out this week, and should start to arrive from Friday, 7 June.

Poll cards give details of the date of the election and tell people which polling station to attend – persons voting in person can only cast their vote at the polling station named on the card.

All registered voters should receive a poll card. Anyone who does not receive their poll card by Wednesday 12 June should contact the council to check if they are registered – there is still time to register after this date.

Photo ID

Anyone wishing to vote in person at a polling station must take photo ID to receive a ballot paper.

A wide range of photo ID is accepted at polling stations, including:

  • a UK or Northern Ireland photocard driving licence, or a driving licence issued by an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Isle of Man or any of the Channel Islands
  • a UK passport, or a passport issued by an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or a Commonwealth country
  • a PASS card (National Proof of Age Standards Scheme)
  • a Blue Badge or most photo bus passes

Many other forms of ID are accepted. For a full list, please look at this page on the gov.uk website: www.gov.uk/how-to-vote/photo-id-youll-need.

Any person who does not have ID from the list can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate, which will be accepted at polling stations. Anyone who already has a Voter Authority Certificate (e.g. from last year’s local elections) does not need to reapply as long as the photo remains a good likeness.

To find out more about applying for a Voter Authority Certificate, please visit www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/generalelection.

Proxy voting

Anyone wishing to vote in person who cannot attend a polling station on 4 July can arrange for a proxy to vote on their behalf.

The deadline for proxy applications is 26 June.

Key election deadlines

  • 7 June – publication of Statement of Persons Nominated
  • 18 June – voter registration (midnight)
  • 19 June – new postal vote applications, or applications to amend existing absent voting arrangements (5pm)
  • 26 June – applications to vote by proxy (5pm)
  • 4 July – emergency proxy applications (5pm)

The official notice for the election, and further information about all aspects of registration, photo ID and more, is available on the council’s website: www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/generalelection.
