Young people in West Norfolk who want to give a ‘boost’ to their ambitions are being offered the chance to take part in a number of free courses taking place this summer.
The training sessions are being provided by Norfolk County Council’s Boost project which is helping 16-30 years in the borough to access the skills they need for the futures they want. The team is particularly keen to hear from 16–18-year-olds who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).
The courses on offer are:
- Confidence Building Workshop. The two hour sessions are being delivered by The Workshop team at Swan Youth Group premises in Downham Market. This course starts on 16 July 2-hour sessions between 10am – 12pm on a Tuesday.
- Introduction to Individual Lash Extension, a one-day course that will be held from 9am – 4.30pm on Wednesday 17 July and will be delivered at Downham Market Library by Norwich School of Hair and Beauty.
The courses are just part of the programme of work that is being delivered by the Boost team which provides employment support, advice, and training, working alongside the West Norfolk Training Grants scheme.
Jo McKenzie-English is the Skills Partnership Manager for Boost. She said:
“We are so pleased to be working with partners to offer these courses for young people in West Norfolk.
“Our role is to support young people aged 16-30 to fulfil their potential and achieve their goals, and we are also working with employers to help them to upskill young employees in their workforce.
“We are committed to making a difference for young people in West Norfolk, and we would urge anyone who is interested in finding out more about our services to please get in touch.”
Cllr Jo Rust, Cabinet member for People and Communities at the borough council, added:
“The Boost project has provided invaluable support and boosted the confidence of more than 500 people aged from 15-30 years old in and around King’s Lynn since it launched two years ago.
“Originally part of the King’s Lynn Town Deal it expanded in April 2024 to cover the whole of West Norfolk, funded by UK Shared Prosperity Funding. It has been vital in helping our young people gain skills, knowledge, and advice.”
One of the young people who Boost has supported into employment is Sage who now works at Emcor UK working as a General Operative.
You can watch a film about Sage’s experience below.
The Boost project team works with two different cohorts of young people, 16-30 year olds in employment and looking to gain new skills, and young people aged 16-30 who are out of work and looking for employment.
All of the courses are open to young people, and anyone who is interested in taking part should get in touch with the Boost team: boost@norfolk.gov.uk
