Public asked for views on ‘Modifications’ to Local Plan

Local plan consultation

Published: Wednesday, 7th August 2024

An eight-week public consultation opens on Wednesday 7 August, giving everyone the opportunity to have their say on ‘Main Modifications’ to the King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Local Plan.

The consultation will run for 8 weeks (rather than the normal 6 weeks) to take account of the holiday season.

In March 2022, The Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Council submitted its Local Plan to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities for independent examination.

Public examination hearings were then held led by Planning Inspectors.

Following these hearings, the Inspectors have now recommended a number of changes (known as Main Modifications in planning) to make the Plan ‘sound’ (a formal planning term for a plan that can be adopted) and these are available to view here: www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/LPRexamination

The eight-week statutory consultation gives the public the chance to have a say on these proposed changes. The consultation remains open until midnight on Wednesday 2 October.

The focus of this consultation is the changes to the Plan as submitted and therefore comments can only be accepted on these aspects of the Local Plan. Comments and representations made in the previous Local Plan consultations already form part of the evidence and do not need to be resubmitted.

The consultation documents, including the Main Modifications Schedule, are available to view online. Hard copies of all the documents are also available at the council offices in King’s Lynn and at the borough’s libraries.

Following the closure of this consultation, the Borough Council will forward all comments to the Planning Inspectors for their consideration.

Once the Inspectors have considered the responses, alongside all the evidence presented throughout the examination, they will determine whether the Local Plan is ‘sound’ and produce a written report outlining their final recommendations.

It should be noted that this Main Modification consultation covers the vast majority of the Local Plan content, however the policies relating to Gypsy and Travellers and Travelling Show People are subject to separate hearing sessions scheduled for September. There will be a separate Main Modifications consultation later this year on this matter.
