The Voice of Ukraine to mark Ukrainian Independence Day in King's Lynn

Ukraine independence day event

Published: Monday, 12th August 2024

Ukrainians who have made their home in west Norfolk will be marking their country’s annual independence day on Saturday 24 August – and everyone is invited to join their free celebration of culture.

Joining the event to be staged from 11am until 4pm in the Tuesday Market Place, King’s Lynn, will be Igor Grohotsky. A former Ukrainian football champion who won The Voice Ukraine TV show in 2014 and Ukrainian Song Project in 2019.

With the help of the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, the event will also feature crafts, culture and song.

Supported by Stories of Lynn, the event will also showcase some of the borough’s long trading links with countries across northern Europe.

The borough’s cabinet member for People and Communities, Cllr Jo Rust, said:

“Independence Day is a special day in the Ukrainian calendar. It's one we are delighted to, once again, be able to support our newest community to celebrate. While it's unfortunate that they can't celebrate at home, as I'm sure they'd wish to, we're happy and proud to help them share aspects of their culture with their west Norfolk hosts.”

The event will be opened by the Mayor of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, Cllr Paul Bland. Igor will be performing on stage from midday. There will be performances through the afternoon from King’s Lynn Community Choir, dancing, Ukrainian poetry and talented local Ukrainian residents.

There will also be free crafts and activities, such as making friendship bracelets using an ancient binding technique and making a traditional board game. There will also be face painting, Ukrainian trinkets for sale and a raffle of small gifts.
