Don’t lose your vote – residents in West Norfolk urged to check voter registration details

The Annual Canvass is underway.

Published: Monday, 2nd September 2024

West Norfolk residents are being urged to check their electoral registration details or risk losing their chance to vote on decisions that affect them.

The annual canvass allows Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk to keep the electoral register up to date, to identify who risks losing their voice at elections, and to encourage them to register before it’s too late. Registered electors, where we hold an email address, will have already received an e-mail asking to confirm their voter registration details as part of the canvass. The e-mail will come from the Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk and from the e-mail address elections@west-norfolk.gov.uk

Andrew Barrett, Electoral Manager at the borough council , said: “Keep an eye out for important updates from the borough council. The annual canvass is our way of making sure that the information on the electoral register for every address is accurate and up to date. To make sure you are able to have your say at future elections, simply follow the instructions in the email.”

Electors are asked to click on the ‘Household Response’ link and follow the instructions.

If we hold an e-mail address for multiple members of the same household, the link will stop working once the first member of a household completes a response and the property has been marked as ‘canvassed’.

Any property that completes the online form before the 23 September deadline will subsequently not receive any additional paper form through the post.

Electors where we do not currently hold an e-mail address, will receive a canvass form through the post, from Monday 23 September 2024 onwards.

Any residents who have any questions can contact the local registration team at the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk by calling 01553 616200 or e-mailing elections@west-norfolk.gov.uk

Recent home movers in particular are urged to check their details. Electoral Commission research has found that recent home movers are less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time. In Great Britain, 92% of those who have lived in their home for 16 years will be registered, compared with 36% of people who have lived at an address for less than a year.

Jackie Killeen, Director of Electoral Administration and Regulation, said: “It’s really important that everyone who is eligible to vote is able to do so. We urge people to check for updates from their local council on this year’s canvass. The council may contact residents by post or email.

“If you are not registered to vote, make sure you provide the necessary information to your local council when asked and register to vote online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.”

Information on registering to vote is available on the Electoral Commission website.
