Work to make it easier to walk and cycle around King’s Lynn is continuing to progress.

The improvements to footpaths and cycle paths, which are being carried out by Norfolk County Council, will see resurfacing soon begin on the Fairstead Cycle Way.

The works, which will begin later this month after being delayed from August, will see some necessary impact on use of the path, however disruption will be kept to a minimum.

The enhancements to the Fairstead Cycle Way are part of a wider programme of improvements to local cycling and walking infrastructure in King’s Lynn, to improve access for all, which also includes work taking place to improve the pedestrian and cyclist island at the junction of Bergen Way, improved crossings near QEH hospital and Wooton Rd junction. Funding has also been secured to deliver a key project to construct a shared use cycle way along the B1146 at Bawsey linking the Crematorium to the A149.

In addition to the improvement works, the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk has launched a new website dedicated to providing information on active travel in King’s Lynn.

The site, which aims to share useful information to help people to choose to travel on foot or by bike, provides an overview of the cycling and walking routes in the town, and the work that is taking place to enhance these: King's Lynn Active Travel Schemes (arcgis.com)

Councillor Lesley Bambridge, Norfolk County Council local member for King’s Lynn North and Central, said:

“The improvements will make travelling on two wheels much better for the many cyclists of King’s Lynn. Walking is also a popular way of getting about both for work, school and leisure and this upgrade will be of great benefit.”

The cycling and walking improvements are part of wider investment in King’s Lynn, including through the Towns Deal programme of funding, to make it easier for people to travel around the town.

Earlier this year, a community cycle hub was established at Lynnsport giving access to low-cost hire for cycles and associated equipment. Two new active travel hubs are planned, and work is also taking place with organisations in King’s Lynn to support the creation of active travel plans that help employees to choose greener ways to travel to and from their workplaces.

And, in the pipeline are improvements to the road junction at Southgates, making it simpler to travel, with access for pedestrians and cyclists also set to be improved here too.

Councillor Michael de Whalley, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Biodiversity for the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk said:

“We are committed to making it easier to travel around King’s Lynn, and we are taking a number of actions to help people to choose to walk or cycle in the town.

“As well as the important improvements to footpaths and cycleways, we are also pleased to launch our new website which provides information about routes for walking and cycling in King’s Lynn.

“Collectively, all of the steps that we are taking now will enable people to travel in ways that are active, healthier, and better for the environment.”
