The return of the Hunstanton Soap Box Derby, organised by the borough council, proved popular once again when it took place on Sunday 22 September 2024.
A full day of street circuit racing and live music was enjoyed by thousands of people in the town. Cllr Bal Anota, Cabinet Member for Events and Public Open Space, attended the event and said:
“I was pleased to see the event brought the biggest crowd ever to Hunstanton. This makes all the hard work and dedication from our borough council teams and many volunteers worth it.
“I would like to thank our events, public open space and resorts teams. Also, the event could not take place without the support we get from the King’s Lynn & District Motor Club. They increased their scrutineers this year which speeded up the whole process. They also controlled our whole course, speeded up the release of the karts and improved safety. We could not run this event without their volunteers.
“I enjoyed watching all the action on our street circuit, the rain that made the track slippery and wet for the second run didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the spectators or the racing team’s spirits, it only made our track faster and more challenging!
“This was our last free Hunstanton and King’s Lynn event of the summer season. Over the last few months thousands of residents and visitors have enjoyed some of the free to attend activities we have organised in the towns. We still have a murder mystery for Halloween in Hunstanton and, of course, Fawkes in the Walks and the Christmas Lights switch on in King’s Lynn and Hunstanton to look forward to later this year.”
Team Apex Legend from Stoke Ferry completed the circuit in the fastest time of 30 seconds. The veterans group (aged 50+) was won by Nutty’s Speed Shop from Hinckley in Leicestershire, they completed the course in 31 seconds. Ram Racing from Holbeach won the under 16’s category (aged 13-15) with a time of 43 seconds and Team Devil Juniors, from Clacton-on-sea in Essex, won the under 13’s category racing down the track in 59 seconds.
The Concours d’Elegance award for the best looking/most outstanding kart, decided by Cllr Paul Bland, the Mayor of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, Mike Ruston, Mayor of Hunstanton, and Cllr Bal Anota, was awarded to Hunstanton Fire Station.
