Look at the Label this Recycling Week

Look at the Label for Recycle Week 2024

Published: Monday, 14th October 2024

The borough council is encouraging residents to Look at the Label during Recycling Week from 14 October 2024.

The waste and recycling team will be visiting shops, schools and markets to spread the message about looking at the label and also answer any waste or recycling questions residents may have.

Cllr Sandra Squire, Cabinet member for Environment and Coastal, explains:

“During Recycling Week we’re reminding residents to look at the label of everything they throw away because in West Norfolk everything that can be recycled is recycled but only if it is put correctly in the green recycling bin in the first place.

“More and more packaging on the products we buy has a readily identifiable label which tells you if the packaging can be recycled. This label, created by the On Pack Recycling Label Scheme (OPRL), is used on both brand packaging and own label packaging. By giving our residents confidence to potentially recycle more this will help two of our corporate priorities of protecting the environment, as well as the efficient and effective delivery of our services.”

“Look at the label also extends into non-food packaging, many bathroom products when empty can also be put in the green bin. I hope to see an increase in this kind of recycling following this awareness week.”

Some packaging which has multi pack packaging will provide specific instructions. An example may be a microwave meal or a pack of sausages sold in a wrapped plastic tray with a cardboard sleeve. OPRL gives you the facts you need to recycle.

School visits in Emneth and West Lynn during recycling week and further visits after half term to local schools have been arranged. The team will also be based at Morrisons in King’s Lynn and the popular Friday Market at Downham Market during the week.

Collection vehicles will display the OPRL message from Recycle Week and the borough council will share advice across its social media channels across the week to look at the label and what can be recycled.

A display will also take place in the Stone Hall before the full Council on 31 October for all councillors to find out more.
