Update on King's Lynn ferry service

Published: Friday, 21st February 2025

Work is progressing to seek to safely reopen the King's Lynn ferry service as soon as practically possible.

In a joint statement, the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, and Norfolk County Council, said: “We fully recognise the ferry’s importance to the town and have prioritised work to understand what is needed to safely reopen the service as soon as practically possible. Following independent inspections by a structural engineer and a safety expert with experience in maritime operations, both councils have agreed to the shorter-term remedial works required to safely reopen the ferry. Alongside that, we continue to work together to explore potential medium- and longer-term solutions.

"The next steps will involve commissioning contractors to carry out the works and meeting again with the ferry operator to discuss what needs doing. Once those next steps have been carried out, we will have a clearer picture of timescales for reopening. Public safety remains the top priority in everything we do and we’d like to again thank people for their ongoing patience and understanding while this work continues to be prioritised.”
