The Borough Council has achieved Level 2 of the Government’s Disability Confident scheme, which means it is now a Disability Confident Employer.
This scheme encourages employers to recruit and retain people who are living with a disability or health condition.
It aims to:
- challenge attitudes towards disability
- increase understanding of disability
- remove barriers to disabled people and those with long-term health conditions
- ensure that disabled people have the opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations
To achieve the Level 2 award the council had to provide evidence and give examples of its good practice in a number of areas, for example making sure that recruitment and selection processes are fully inclusive and accessible, and supporting employees to manage disabilities or health conditions.
The Borough Council’s Assistant Director for Central Services, Becky Box, said:
“Our focus now will be on continuing to use the disability confident scheme framework and the experience we have gained to further improve our offer to disabled job applicants and employees.”
